Befriend St Joseph
As someone who sins, I love St. Joseph!
I mean, I can easily relate to him: he sinned; I sin. We have something in common, not because I know that he struggled with sin in exactly the same way I do, but because he lived an ordinary human life in an ordinary home, facing the responsibilities, difficulties, work, and demands of everyday life. That is where I find him so close to me. I, too, am an ordinary man. I wake up, work, get tired, make mistakes, struggle with my weaknesses, and try to become better. Every day, I fall short of the man I want to be. Yet every day, I strive to rise again and embrace the virtues I see in St. Joseph—his humility, patience, silence, chastity, courage, responsibility, hard work, faithfulness, and his love
I often imagine the ordinary days of Nazareth: Joseph working with his hands, Mary preparing the home, and Jesus growing up in their midst. It was a life filled not only with extraordinary moments but also with ordinary routines. And perhaps that is what speaks to me most deeply: holiness was lived there in the middle of ordinary life. It reminds me that I do not need an extraordinary life to strive for holiness; I simply need to be faithful in the life God has given me. St. Joseph has been the best example of what it truly means to be a man. In a world where manhood is often measured by power, dominance, appearance, wealth, or attention, Joseph presents a profoundly different example. The Scriptures do not record a single word spoken by him, yet his actions continue to speak powerfully. His strength was revealed through his character, the responsibilities he accepted, the sacrifices he made, and the way he loved and cared for others. In a world where love is often confused with possession, control, or desire, St. Joseph presents something different. To truly love a woman—whether she is one's girlfriend or spouse—is to respect her dignity, honour her as a person, remain faithful, and genuinely desire what is good for her. Love should never become an excuse to control, manipulate, disrespect, or use another person. In a world where women are objectified for the sake of one's selfish desires, St. Joseph teaches how to be in love, how to love others and respect fellow humans, and this is where I find that St. Joseph truly captivated my heart. Yet Joseph lived 2000 years ago; his life and his heroic virtues continue to speak to the men of today. His purity did not make him less of a man. Instead, it revealed his strength, self-mastery, and ability to love faithfully. To me, St. Joseph was a truly virile man, not because he dominated others or constantly tried to prove his masculinity, but because he possessed courage, self-control, responsibility, and the strength to serve and sacrifice.
Months ago, I began a journey to befriend St. Joseph. My desire to know him had been growing for months, and sometimes I felt that St. Joseph himself was seeking me out. Last summer, he kept entering my thoughts during prayer and daily routines. The more I learned about him, the more captivated I became. I saw in him the virtues of Justice, Charity, Courage, Chastity, Compassion, and Humility—virtues I deeply admire and desire to make my own.
